Athens International Airport
AthensIn March 29, 2001, the Athens International Airport, otherwise known as Elefthérios Venizélos, started its operation. It is a civilian (public) airport which is owned by the Greek Government and is currently managed by Athens International Airport S.A. It is situated 20 kilometers from central Athens. It serves as the base for Aegean Airlines and for Olympic Airlines, the airline owned by the state. Athens Airport provides primarily for the people and visitors of Athens and Attica in Greece.

In 2007, about 16,500,000 passengers have set foot in this airport. It has two terminals; these are the main and the satellite terminals.

Transportation and Facilities
This airport is considered as one of the most luxurious and most modern airport in the world. It has the latest and outstanding facilities that an airport could have. It has different restaurants, entertainment areas, cash exchanges, travel agencies and shopping areas. Lounges are likewise provided for the first class and business class passengers of the different airlines. There is also a hotel, Sofitel Athens Airport, which is found adjacent the main terminal.

Security is very tight in Athens Airport. It has two robotic systems, Hercules and Ulysses. These are able to detect and handle explosives, in order to save the airport and the lives of individuals that are within the area.

Taxis, rails and buses are available for passengers going to and from the airport. Taxis are located outside the airport terminal while the rail station is found opposite of the airport terminal. There are several bus lines that are accessible 24/7. These can be found at the terminal’s lower level. Buses leave at an interval of 15 to 30 minutes depending on the influx of the passengers.
