About Alta Tourism
Alta, Norway, is a haven for nature’s delights. It is an excellent place to watch the midnight sun in, and it’s also excellent for bird watching. Alta is known for being a great location to study the Aurora Borealis from. Despite its relatively quiet culture, Alta, Norway is considered a communication hub in Finnmark.

In terms of milestones, Alta boasts of being home to the northernmost Subway restaurant in the world, and also of the northernmost location for an Ice Hotel. Altaelva, the river beloved to the citizens of Alta, boasts of having carved out one of the largest canyons in Europe. From the plateau where it originates, the High Plateau of Finnmarksvidda, down to the Altafjord, the aptly-named fjord of Alta, Norway spans the renowned European canyon.

Altaelva is home to the best salmons in Norway, so it is understandable how it became central to a protest controversy in the late 1970s to early 1980s. This protest was done to stop the construction of a dam and a hydroelectric power plant, which would disrupt reindeer migration, and might harm the ecosystem of the prized salmons. The controversy was brought to a resolution, and Alta’s salmons are still among the best in the world.

There are rock carvings in Alta that served as the impetus for the area to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. These carvings were then attributed to the Komsa culture, duly named after the mountain that they were located in: the Komsa mountain.

Do not let the quiet idyll of Alta deceive you, as its delights are sure to be breathtaking.
