Alexandroupolis International Airport
Alexandroupolis Airport or Dimokritos International Airport is located in Apalos, a suburb which is about 6 kilometers from the city of Alexandroupolis. It is currently being considered as one of the busiest airports within Greece since it has become the main core of travels for Aegean and Olympic Airways. Every day, there are about 4 flights going to Athens and Creta. During the summer months, additional flights going to and from Russia and Germany are added.
The Greek Government owns and operates the Alexandroupolis Airport. It was built in 1944 with a small terminal building and small runway. In 1955, it turned into an international airport and in 1992 it was given the nickname of Dimokritos, from the atomic philosopher who was born in Avdira.
Transportation and Facilities
Alexandroupolis International Airport is connected to the Alexandroupolis city through the International road E90. Public buses, taxis and shuttles serve to bring passengers from the city to the airport. Olympic Airways bus and other public buses are available every hour. These buses arrive every hour in front of the airport. Aside from these, car rentals are also available. These cars will bring you to wherever location you want them to.
Within the airport terminal is a post box which is collected everyday. There are several public telephones that are also available for the use of passengers. In addition, buffet and bar are also accessible. There is also a lounge where waiting passenger can stay prior to their flights.
